A Brief History of the Mercurial
Debuted by Ronaldo in 1998 for the World Cup in France, Nike’s second longest-serving silo marks its 25th anniversary, to pay homage to a long lineage of players who defied the laws of physics wearing the gravity-defying Mercurial football boot.
Originally intended to make its mark on the world as a lightweight addition to the Tiempo series, the Nike Mercurial paved the way beyond the Tiempo to become a speed silo in its own right.
Fashioned with Ronaldo‘s captivating velocity in mind, the Mercurial silo redefined the parameters previously imposed upon the design of football boots and how they perform out on the pitch.
With a thinner plate, reduced weight and a signature KNG-100 synthetic upper making their appearance on Ronaldo’s feet in the summer of 1998, Nike shattered the stigma that synthetic boots were inferior and kickstarted a football revolution…
The Marvelous Mercurial Meets ‘Metallic Silver’
Now considered the boot of choice for many of the world’s most prolific players past and present, from Kylian Mbappé to Eden Hazard, Raheem Sterling, Zlatan Ibrahimović and Didier Drogba, it’s clear the Mercurial silo has withstood the test of time.
In honour of its legendary status within the world of football, Nike unveils their all-new ‘Mercurial 25 Years Boot Pack‘ featuring the Nike Mercurial Superfly 9 XXV and Vapor 15 Elite in a predominantly metallic silver colourway.
With a revamped aesthetic, the Mercurial Superfly fuses Metallic Silver with ‘Hyper Pink‘ detailing.
Whilst the Vapor adopts a ‘Volt‘ colourway to pay homage to the colourways typically associated with the Mercurial Silo.
To those who can recall, it’s not the first time an anniversary boot pack for the Mercurial features Metallic Silver either- the first being in 2013 with its 15-year anniversary Mercurial XV.
Nike Mercurial Superfly 9 XXV & Vapor 15 Elite
Housing an XXV Mercurial logo on the upper alongside an enigmatic all-over logo design with signature Swoosh and Mercurial logo running the length of the boots, it’s clear Nike has gone above and beyond with their attention to detail…
In particular, the all-new Mercurial Superfly 9 sees a revamped aesthetic, taking inspiration from the Wolf Grey/Pink Superfly released in early June 2015.
But while the design has seen a huge overhaul, the boot tech remains the same as the current generation of Mercurial Superfly and Vapor and reiterates the old saying- ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’.
As a silo that houses a refined 3/4 Zoom Air Unit, alongside Vaporposite + technology and Tri-Stud configuration for unparalleled performance on the pitch, the Mercurial Superfly & Vapor 15 Elite are the boot of choice for players wishing to follow in the footsteps of their heroes.
